Part 2: Now I wondered whether Dorothy had come much closer to finding Melissa than any of us realized.
The following morning, I took Dorothy’s storage boxes out of the closet.
They were filled with recipe cards, grocery lists, old appointment reminders, and notebooks.
Dorothy had never been particularly organized, but she kept anything important.
I spent hours sorting through the papers until I found a blue notebook.
Inside were dates, telephone numbers, and notes about conversations with county investigators.
She had questioned the identification of Melissa’s remains.
She had requested information about dental records.
And she had contacted a rehabilitation facility called St. Anne’s.
One entry mentioned an unidentified female patient whose approximate age matched Melissa’s.
Another note said Calvin believed she was hurting herself by continuing to search.
