“My daughter left her wedding dress with me after abruptly canceling the ceremony. Three months later, her ex-fiancé appeared at my front door asking for it back. Emily called off her wedding just four days before she was supposed to walk down the aisle. I found out while she was standing in my bedroom wearing the dress I had spent nearly $3,000 on. She stared at herself in the mirror for a long moment. Then she said quietly, “I can’t do this, Mom.” I looked at her reflection. “What do you mean?” “I can’t marry Daniel.” That was it. No explanation. No warning. Nothing. I turned toward her. “Did something happen?” She shook her head. “Did Daniel do something?” “No.” “Then why are you canceling your wedding four days before it happens?” Emily looked down at the floor. “I can’t explain it.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Do you understand how much money we’re about to lose?” “I know.” “The venue is already paid for. The flowers. The catering. The dress. I paid for almost everything, Emily.” “I said I know.” “Then tell me what happened.” Her eyes filled with tears. “I don’t want to talk about it.” That only made me more frustrated. “You’re canceling a wedding that cost thousands of dollars, and you won’t even tell me why?” “I’m sorry.” “Sorry doesn’t bring any of that money back.” Emily suddenly reached behind herself and began unzipping the dress. “What are you doing?” She stepped out of it, grabbed her clothes, and dressed quickly. Then she pushed the wedding gown into my arms. “You paid for it, right?” “Emily—” “Then you keep it.” She headed for the bedroom door. “Keep the dress. Keep everything. I don’t care.” I followed her into the hallway. “If you walk out of here without explaining anything, don’t expect me to pretend everything is fine tomorrow.” She stopped for a moment. But she never turned around. “I’m not asking you to.” Then she left. After that, we barely spoke. The wedding dress stayed inside its garment bag in my spare bedroom for the next three months. I tried not to think about it. Then, one Saturday morning, someone knocked on my front door. When I opened it, Daniel was standing there. I hadn’t seen him since the wedding was canceled. I stared at him. “What are you doing here?” “I need to pick something up.” I folded my arms. “What?” He hesitated. “Emily’s wedding dress.” For a second, I thought I had misheard him. Then I laughed. “You came here three months later to collect your ex-fiancée’s wedding gown?” “Yes.” “Why?” “I just need it.” “That doesn’t answer my question.” He sighed. “Please. I don’t want to argue with you.” “Then don’t. You’re not getting it.” “Can you please just give me the dress?” I narrowed my eyes. “Why do you even want it?” Daniel said nothing. I started closing the door. He quickly put out his hand. “Wait.” “What?” His voice changed. “I really need that dress.” Something about the way he said it made me pause. Not sentimental. Not angry. Desperate. I stared at him for several seconds. “Fine.” I stepped away from the door. “But you’re telling me why.” I walked into the spare bedroom and took the garment bag from the back of the door. Daniel followed me. I held it up. “There. Now explain.” He immediately reached for it. I pulled it back. “Not until you answer me.” Instead, Daniel grabbed the garment bag. “Daniel, let go.” “I don’t want to fight with you.” “Then tell me what’s going on.” I pulled the dress free from the bag before he could take it. Daniel caught one side. I held onto the other. For several ridiculous seconds, we stood in my hallway tugging Emily’s wedding dress back and forth like two children fighting over a blanket. Then a voice behind us said, “What the hell are you two doing?” I froze. Emily was standing in the doorway. I looked at her. Then at Daniel. Emily frowned at him. “I told you I’d wait in the car.” My stomach tightened. “You came here together?” “Mom—” She stepped forward. “Just give Daniel the dress.” “Why?” “Please.” That was the moment I knew for certain. They were hiding something. I tightened my grip on the gown. “No.” Emily grabbed one of the sleeves. “Mom, stop.” “Then tell me why both of you suddenly need this dress.” Daniel pulled from the other side. Then I heard it. A small tearing sound. Emily’s face changed instantly. “Stop!” We all froze. The inner lining of the dress had split open near the waist. And underneath it was something I had never noticed before. A tiny concealed pocket sewn into the fabric. There was something inside. I reached toward it. Emily grabbed my wrist. “Mom, don’t.” I looked directly at her. Then at Daniel. “So that’s why you wanted the dress.” Neither of them answered. And judging by the expressions on their faces, whatever had been hidden inside that pocket had everything to do with why Emily canceled the wedding in the first place.
