the chair beside me.
Then back to me.
Daniel’s fingers loosened around Rachel’s.
She looked down at their hands.
Then up at him.
“Daniel?”
He didn’t answer.
Michael followed my gaze.
“Friend of yours?”
“My husband.”
He blinked.
“That’s Daniel?”
“Apparently.”
“With—”
“Yes.”
Michael nodded slowly.
“I see.”
Rachel recognized me too.
Her eyes moved from me to Michael.
Then back to Daniel.
“Who is that?” she asked.
“No idea.”
Too fast.
I almost smiled.
Daniel kept staring at us.
Rachel squeezed his hand.
He barely responded.
Then he asked her, “Do you know him?”
She stopped walking.
“Why would I know who your wife is talking to?”
Daniel finally looked at her.
“I was just asking.”
“No, you weren’t.”
A family rolled their luggage between us, breaking the moment.
Michael leaned toward me.
“Should I wave?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Should I kiss your cheek?”
“Michael.”
“I’m trying to be supportive.”
