I clearly remembered was looking out the window at a brightly lit intersection.
Now I was sitting in the underground garage.
Alone.
With more than an hour missing.
I carefully gathered my handbag and went upstairs.
Julian was relaxing on the living room sofa.
The television was playing quietly.
When he saw me, he smiled.
“Hey, sweetheart. Another long day?”
I looked at him.
The familiar face.
The reassuring smile.
The man I’d trusted for years.
“Yes,” I answered.
He chuckled.
“I keep telling you to slow down.”
I forced a smile.
“Maybe you’re right.”
Then I walked into the bedroom and closed the door.
I waited until I could hear the television again.
Only then did I remove the recorder from my handbag.
For several seconds, I stared at the little device.
Part of me was frightened of what I might hear.
Another part desperately wanted a simple explanation.
